Kindergarten

SMART GOAL: In May of 2011, 60% of kindergarten students will be able to write a simple sentence on topic.

Essential Outcomes:  These are the strategies our team has decided to utilize to meet our goal

bulletThe classroom teacher will provided opportunities to write in weekly journal activities.
bulletThe classroom teachers will provide opportunities for the students to participate in shared writing activities, morning message, and classroom stories.
bulletStudents will be given a topic to write about in their journals once a week.  The writings will include high frequency words that have been introduced in class.  Students will be encouraged to sound out other words to complete their thoughts.
bulletThe classroom teacher will model writing sentences on topic.
bulletStudents will have opportunities to free write and write on assigned topics during weekly centers.

SMART GOAL: 65% of kindergarten students will recognize 40 out of 48 sight words in May 2011.

bullet The classroom teacher will introduce grade level appropriate sight words in a scheduled manner.
bullet The classroom teacher will provide regular opportunities for students to build, write, and read the sight words.
bullet Introduced sight words will be posted on the classroom word wall.
bullet The classroom teacher will communicate with parents the sight words being taught.
bullet The classroom teacher will assess each student every 3 weeks on sight words that have been introduced during that time period and share assessment results with parents.
bullet The classroom teacher  will provide parents with activities to increase sight word recognition at home.

SMART GOAL: 75% of kindergarten students will know 20 out of 26 letter sounds in May 2011.

bulletThe classroom teacher will follow Orton-Gillingham sequence to introduce one letter each week.
bulletThe classroom teacher will use Orton-Gillingham three part drill to practice and reinforce letter/sound relationships.
bulletStudents will work with a small group of students in a phonics centers each week to reinforce letter/sound relationships.
bulletThe classroom teacher will ask students to help sound out words while the teacher is writing a whole group message.

SMART GOAL:  The percentage of students who are reading at a DRA level 3 or higher will reach 65% in May 2011.

bulletThe classroom teacher will implement Guided Reading Groups 2 to 3 times per week.
bulletThe classroom teacher will provide bookbags with leveled books for students to take home for reading practice.
bulletThe classroom teacher will use Orton-Gillingham methods and materials to teach letter sounds and blending.
bulletThe classroom teacher will use Looking At Print books to focus on concepts of print.
bulletThe classroom teacher will introduce and focus on selected high frequency  words weekly.
