| The classroom teacher will provided opportunities to write in weekly journal activities. | |
| The classroom teachers will provide opportunities for the students to participate in shared writing activities, morning message, and classroom stories. | |
| Students will be given a topic to write about in their journals once a week. The writings will include high frequency words that have been introduced in class. Students will be encouraged to sound out other words to complete their thoughts. | |
| The classroom teacher will model writing sentences on topic. | |
| Students will have opportunities to free write and write on assigned topics during weekly centers. |
SMART GOAL: 65% of kindergarten students will recognize 40 out of 48 sight words in May 2011.

| The classroom teacher will assess each student every 3 weeks on sight words that have been introduced during that time period and share assessment results with parents. |

SMART GOAL: 75% of kindergarten students will know 20 out of 26 letter sounds in May 2011.

| The classroom teacher will use Orton-Gillingham three part drill to practice and reinforce letter/sound relationships. | |
| Students will work with a small group of students in a phonics centers each week to reinforce letter/sound relationships. | |
| The classroom teacher will ask students to help sound out words while the teacher is writing a whole group message. |
SMART GOAL: The percentage of students who are reading at a DRA level 3 or higher will reach 65% in May 2011.

| The classroom teacher will use Looking At Print books to focus on concepts of print. | |
| The classroom teacher will introduce and focus on selected high frequency words weekly. |
