Social Studies

This week we will be working on our Native American Research Reports. Please remember that you child’s notes are due on Tuesday, February 7th. The notes will be returned with comments on February 9th. Please make sure you are using complete sentences!

 

Science

This week we will start investigating light. Students will gain an understanding of how light gives us sight. They will look at their eyes in the bright light and in darkness. We will also begin to discuss how light travels.

Math

This week in math we will be wrapping up Unit 2. We will be taking a test on Tuesday. The test will be on chapter 8: dividing using fact families. This will wrap up Unit 2 and we will begin Unit 3: Geometry, Fractions, and Decimals.

 

Student Council

Our student council is raising money to help an endangered animal. They choose to donate to endangered tigers because we are the Wilde Tigers. We will be having different activities to help raise money. On Feb. 8th, students will be able to bring in a stuffed animal to school if they donate fifty cents.

 

Important Dates

  • Every Monday is a late start Monday. The first bell rings at 9:17am.
  • 2/8: 50 cents- bring your stuffed animal to school day
  • 2/13: Hundredth Day of School
  • 2/14: Valentine Fun Day!

Native American Research Project

 

Over the next several weeks, you will be researching about a Michigan Native American Tribe.  The tribe will be selected for you.  This will be a collaborative project in Social Studies class with Mrs. Boudia and with Mrs. Roberg our media specialist.  Below you will find all the specific information needed for the research project.

 

 

 

This assignment will have 3 parts. 

 

Part 1:

You will write a 1 page research report on the Native American tribe selected for you.  You will gather as much information as possible about your Native American tribe.  There will be time allotted to you in Media, Social Studies, and in your own classroom computer time.

 

Part 2:

You will have to create an interesting cover for your report.  The cover for your report needs to include an illustration of your tribe.  It can be created with marker, crayons, or colored pencils. (Please do not use clip art)The cover should include your name, the tribe you are researching, and the due date of the project.

 

Part 3:

You will create a poster board with pictures of your tribe. You must find at least 5 pictures from the internet of artifacts from the tribe you are researching (for example: tools, clothing, food) under each picture you should include a caption describing your picture.  A tri-fold poster is suggested.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Guidelines:

Part 1: Research Report Cover (25 Points)

2.  Include a creative illustration that shows something important about your subject.

3.  Use colored pencils or crayons for the cover (No markers, unless to outline).

 

Part 2: Written Report (50 Points)

     Introductory paragraph should include:

1.  The name of your Tribe

2.  A description of why you are researching the Native American Tribe from Michigan.

3.  Lively and descriptive language for introducing the Native American Tribe, so the reader is compelled to read on.

 

Body of the report (2 to 4 paragraphs) should include:

1.  Details  about the tribe  ( see note section to help you on this)

2.  Characteristics/ Life skills/Customs that the tribe used.

3.  3- Fun Facts about the tribe

 

Closing paragraph may include:

1.  What was the most fascinating facts you learned about this tribe.

2.  What you thought was the most challenging part of being in this tribe.

3.  Must include your final thoughts about this Native American Tribe.

 

Part 3: Poster Board (25 Points)

          A tri-fold poster is suggested for this section:

     1.    Find at least 5 (you may include more) pictures of your tribe from the internet.

     2.   Your pictures should be artifacts that your tribe used (tools, housing, clothing, jewelry or food)

     3.   Each picture should include a caption describing what the artifact is and how it was used by

Native American Research Project

Due Dates:

January 18th:

  • Mrs. Boudia will assign a tribe to you and will pass out the assignment in Social Studies.  You will need to take this home and read it over with parents and have them sign the last sheet of paper on this packet.  You will need to sign it and a parent will need to sign it.  Please return it to school on January 19th!

January 19th-February 7th:

  • We will allow students to research their tribe in the computer lab.  During this time you should be finding answers to your question in your note packet.  This note packet should stay in your Social Studies folder.  You will be allowed to take it back and forth to school, but remember to bring it back on Social Studies switch days.  Time will be allowed in both Social Studies and Media, but some information may need to be researched at home or your public library.  The use of the internet, encyclopedia, and books will all be allowed.

February 7th:

  • Your research notes will need to be answered in complete sentence and are due to Mrs. Boudia on February 7th.  They will be handed back with comments by February 9th.
  • Then when it is passed back you will then take your notes and write the research paper with these notes.  Please follow the format on the Guidelines page of this packet.

February 15th:

  • All research reports and posters will be due.
  • The reports may be neatly written or typed.  The captions on the poster may be neatly written or typed. 
  • All REPORTS AND POSTERS WILL BE DUE ON THIS DAY!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dear Families,

 

    I have explained everything in this packet with your child in Social Studies.  I went over the due dates and expectations.  MAJORITY of this reports and the research will be completed in school.  However, some time may be needed at home to work on writing the report, or a trip to your local library may be needed.  This is a third grade project.  Helping your child is always appreciated and will benefit your child’s learning experience, but please allow your child to complete this third grade project.  Please reread over this packet with your child.  After you have gone over this project with your child please sign your

name and have your child sign his or her name.   As always your support is appreciated!
