What is a Professional
Learning Community?
There are three Big Ideas
of the Professional Learning Community approach.
Big Idea #1: Ensuring all students can learn
Big Idea #2: A culture of collaboration
Big Idea #3: Focus on Results
The staff at Susick Elementary focuses on
answering the four questions that make up a Professional Learning Community.
Question #1: What do we want our students to
learn?
Question #2: How do we know the students
learned the concepts?
Question #3: What do we do for the students
who have not learned the concepts?
Question #4: What do we do for the students
who have learned the concepts?
Below are Susick Elementary’s School
Improvement Goals for the 2010-2011 school yr:
Goal #1 Reading
Objective: All students will improve their DRA
score by a minimum of one grade level.
Strategy: Guided Reading
Activities:

DRA2 and MLPP testing
administered to identify students’ reading level

Students reading text
at their appropriate reading level

Small groups of 3-5
students working with teacher on reading skills such as fluency and
comprehension

90 minutes of
Language Arts Block everyday

Interventions and
support from the Special Ed., Title I, and ELL staff

Utilization of
Literacy Library

Accelerated Reader
Program
Goal #2 Math
Objective: All Students Will Achieve at Least 80%
on the End of the Year Math Assessment
Strategy: Differentiated Instruction and
Support
Activities:

Whole group and small
group instruction

Utilization of math manipulatives as well as the SMART board technology

support from the Special Ed., Title I, and ELL staff
Goal #3 Writing
Objective: All Students will demonstrate an
increase in Writing Proficiency in All Content Areas
Strategy: Writer’s Workshop
Activities:

Each classroom teacher utilizes the Writer’s Workshop for 45 minutes, four days a week

Strong emphasis placed on writing in
other content areas such as Science, Social Studies, and Math

Special Ed., Title I, and ELL staff
