Purpose

The purpose of the program is to teach the requisite skills for academic success, to enable the student, temporarily or permanently away from their home school to return to the regular classroom. Life skills are taught directly and progress is monitored closely. The WCS Middle School Alternative Program is a "redirection: program designed to geared toward building academics, community service, leadership, responsibility, and self esteem. Students meet the following four goals to be recommended for return to their home-school:

  • Academics
  • Attendance
  • Attitude
  • Behavior

Curriculum

Students will be taught Math, English, Social Studies, and Science from the WCS Curriculum as designated by their grade level. Their ability level will be assessed and modifications to the curriculum will be made as appropriate. Physical activity and technology are incorporated into the curriculum daily as are life skills training and community service. Life Skills is taught as a separate class with additional content included in all subject areas. Community service will be developed through Serve Learning (volunteering) opportunities.
