Warren Consolidated Schools Students Capture the Wind
WCS Students recently completed the construction of the first ever K-12 build Michigan-based Mariah Power Windspire.
The 30 ft. wind turbine will generate electricity for Butcher Educational Center and provide the opportunity for students to conduct wind research as part of the Warren Consolidated Schools commitment to renewable energy. Additionally, the turbine will stand as a symbol of the commitment that the district has made to reinvent Michigan's economy and to provide knowledge regarding renewable energy and Michigan's future.
Warren Consolidated Schools broke ground March 16, 2009 on the first Windspire wind turbine to be installed at a K-12 school in Michigan. The groundbreaking took place at Butcher Educational Center, home of the Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center.
According to Warren Consolidated Consultant for Special Programs, David Walsh, the wind turbine will generate electricity for Butcher Educational Center and provide students with the opportunity to conduct wind research as part of the MMSTC’s curriculum.
Additional district efforts include the development of K-12 curriculum units that encourage students to understand the importance of renewable energy and energy conservation. These units will be created throughout the summer with implementation in the 2009-2010 school year. Currently, students are working in the area of bio-fuel development, wind and solar energy as well as geo-thermal. Students at the Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center have set up an eco-pond project in which a solar panel produces electricity to operate a pump to produce oxygen for the pond. These projects are used to develop student research on renewable energy issues and students use this information for formal research studies.
