WCS Art Show!

Several Jefferson students were honored, last night, at the District Art Show Opening Ceremonies!  Their work is currently being displayed at the Warren Community Center.  Also, in case you were unaware, Jane Clinton was instrumental in the planning, set-up, and implementation of this program.  Awesome job, Mrs. Clinton!
If you get a chance, take time to stop in at the Warren Community Center...the artwork is amazing!

Writing Celebration

This year, the Jefferson Teachers have begun  to focus on Writing using the Lucy Calkins' Writer's Workshop approach.   The quality of writing that is occurring, in each classroom, is truly amazing.   During the month of March, classroom teachers, working with their teams, selected one piece of writing to represent their Grade Level at this year's Writing Celebration.

These six students were honored on Monday, May 3 at the Performing Arts Center for their achievement in writing.   One piece of writing out of the six submitted was chosen to be read aloud to the audience at the PAC!  Congratulations to Jefferson's Grade-Level winners for Writing Celebration!

Class Selection

It is that time of year when parents begin to ask about student placement for next year.  The procedures we use here at Jefferson are based upon WCS Board Policy.  To help you understand these procedures, I will answer the most frequently answered questions:

  1. When are students placed in classes for next year?

At the end of May, teachers will meet together and with me to make preliminary placements for the next school year.

Q.     How are students placed in classes?

Students are placed in classes to accomplish as much balance as possible.  Consideration is given to academic ability, social behavior, leadership qualities, individual needs and gender.  Using this and other criteria, all attempts will be made to balance classes.  It is the current classroom teacher who is most familiar with your child’s learning style and individual needs.  Using this knowledge, the staff will be able to make the best recommendation for your child.

  1. When will these placements be finalized?

Sometimes events occur over the summer which may make it necessary to add/delete a classroom or change teaching personnel.   Therefore, it may be necessary to change class placement through the end of August.

  1. Can parents request placement in a particular classroom?

Parents who have special considerations should submit a letter to me explaining the educational circumstances that they would like to have reviewed by the placement team.  Specific requests for a particular teacher cannot be made.  There are no guarantees in regards to placement.  Letters of consideration need to be submitted to the Main Office no later than May 14.  Teachers will not accept these letters.

Lights!  Camera!  Action!  Read!

Yes, it's March Reading Month!!  Hopefully, your Jefferson Student(s) have been reading at home and logging their minutes!  Students are competing, individually-and-as a class, for prizes for the most minutes read.  Additionally, any student who turns in their Reading Log on Mondays will be entered into a drawing for more prizes!  Finally, AT ANY MOMENT, during the school day, students might hear "Lights, Camera, Action!" over the intercom.  This is their cue to Drop Everything and Read!  During DEAR time, the Paparazzi take pictures of your students reading in the classroom!  So, good luck and KEEP READING!

Recycling at Jefferson!

The RECYCLING BIN is HERE!  You may have noticed the bright green and yellow bin in our parking lot!  Please use this receptacle to recycle your paper, newspaper, and magazines!  We must reach 4 tons every 30 days in order to keep this bin at Jefferson!  This is a wonderful community service...so, please step up and RECYCLE!

We are in need of Board Games!

Jefferson students are in need of gently used Board Games!  During the long months of winter and early spring, our students stay inside for recess when the weather is too cold or wet.  To help make this time fun, students would love to play games such as Sorry, Connect Four, Checkers, Mancala, and more....If you have gently used games with all of the pieces, please consider donating them to Jefferson!  Thank you!

Be Safe in the Parking Lot!

Please hang up your cell phones before driving into the school parking lot!  With  so many children walking through the parking lot, it is your responsibility to be as safe as possible.

When you drop off your children in the morning, you MUST use the Drop-Off Lane closest to the school.

If you are walking your children through the parking lot, please do not walk in the path of a moving car.  Often I will see parents walk in front of a moving car...the, get upset at the driver for not seeing them.  Both walkers and drivers need to take responsibility for safety!

Buckle up your Children!  Also, small children should be in the back seat.  I realize the trip home may be a short one, however, most accidents occur within two miles of home.

And....Drive slowly!
