A Message from the Superintendent
June 18, 2010
Dear WCS Community,
At their June 16, 2010 meeting, the Board of Education approved the Operating Budget for 2010-11, which included many of the observations and recommendations made by our Strategic Planning Parent Focus Group.
Key points to the budget that affect our students for next year are:
Curriculum & Course Offerings
It has been common practice in WCS to eliminate low enrollment courses or change the programs offered at the Career Preparation Center (CPC) and at our high schools to meet future career needs for students and gain economic efficiencies. For example, WCS moved into medical machining from an older style manufacturing program at the CPC last year. Additionally, the CPC is currently working toward adding opportunities in the Emergency Medical Technician, Nurse Assistant, and Pharmacy Technician programs for the 2011-12 school year. Also, the Watch and Clock, Teacher Cadet, Agriscience, and Office-Legal Assistant programs will not run next year.
Also, the district will continue its strong commitment to maintaining a focus on class size for students and staff.
Athletics
The Activity Fee for 2010-11 will apply ONLY to athletics and marching/varsity band. The fee is $50 per sport or $50 for marching/varsity band at the high school and $35 per sport for middle school.
The district has eliminated transportation for club sports as other aspects of club sports are already not funded by the district. Likewise, no activity fee will be assessed for club sports.
One-way athletic transportation has been expanded to include Grosse Pointe, L'Anse Creuse, and Chippewa Valley Schools. All other aspects of athletic transportation remain the same as this past year.
Middle School basketball and volleyball will charge a $2.00 admission fee.
Freshman and JV Athletics will increase the admission fee from $3.00 to $5.00, but one admission fee will cover an entire evening of activity. (eg. $5.00 will cover Freshman, JV, and Varsity Basketball if all three are at home on the same evening.)
Please know that I am grateful for the Board of Education's support of this balanced plan for next year. I look forward to keeping WCS strong and a great place for kids to learn!
Thanks again for your support and have a great summer.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Livernois, Ph.D.
