What is a Professional Learning Community?

The professional learning community recognizes that its members must engage in the ongoing study and constant practice that characterize an organization committed to continuous improvement.  This is a community where educators create an environment that fosters mutual cooperation, emotional support, and personal growth as they work together to achieve what they cannot accomplish alone.

CARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL’S
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY

Through our Professional Learning Community “PLC”, the Carter staff meets weekly to determine the best practices to help our students achieve optimal academic success.  All professional staff in the building engages with colleagues in the ongoing exploration of three crucial questions that drive the work of those within the PLC.

        1.  What do we want each student to know?
        2.  How will we know when each student has learned it?
        3.  How will we respond when a students doesn’t learn the material?

The answer to the third question separates learning communities from traditional schools.
