6 Trait Writing
1. Ideas- This is the heart of the message.
It is the central idea and the support for that idea. Is the message clear?
Is the topic narrow and manageable? Details should be high quality and not
obvious or too general.
2. Organization- does your piece have a “hook” in
the beginning? How is the end? Does the plot make sense? Do you have a
central idea and supporting details?
3. Voice- writing is as individual as
personality, writing has real voice when the author is committed to the
topic, writing about what you know, have experienced and care about will
come through in your writing.
4. Word Choice- use STRONG and SPECIFIC verbs
rather than many adjectives – your piece will be alive and exciting
5. Sentence Fluency- this is the flow of a piece,
should have varying sentence lengths, and sentences should not all start
the same way
6. Conventions- punctuation, capitalization,
spelling
The Writing Process
1. Prewriting- brainstorming ideas by jotting down lists,
creating graphic organizers of ideas, mind-mapping, outlines, and quick
writes
2. Drafting- begin writing at this point
3. Revision- Revise your first draft the next day. It is
always to better to revisit your rough draft after having taken a break
from it. Revise your first draft by adding, deleting, and reorganizing your
ideas. Share your writing with as many other people as you can
(conferencing) to get meaningful feedback.
Use other peoples’ suggestions and questions to make your writing
better. All writers (professional and amateur), spend the majority of
their time on revision.
4. Editing- fix spelling, capitalization, grammar, and
punctuation errors
5. Publish- final draft
The best environment for writing is a quiet place with as few
distractions as possible. Find a
special place that you designate as your writing space.
